Member Spotlight: Kathy Houghton How did you learn that you had MCS?
As of today, I am 51 years old and I have been ill for over 15 years. I was first diagnosed by a well known CFS doctor in south Florida. He was the original doctor who also told me about being Chemically Sensitive. I remember his exact words: "Well Kathy, I have good news and I have bad news for you... the good news is… you're probably not going to die from this but that is also the bad news... |

Healing Modalities: Oil Pulling The latest craze in healing modalities has turned to what is known as oil pulling. Perhaps you’ve heard about it already.
Oil pulling was developed by Dr. Karach and presented in a paper claiming oil pulling will cure “head-aches, bronchitis, tooth pain, thrombosis, eczema, ulcers and diseases of stomach, intestines, heart, blood, kidney, liver, lungs and women’s diseases. I have dealt with depression my entire adult life. In fact, I first became depressed as a teen-ager. When I finally went to a psychiatrist and started taking medication in my twentieth year I was excited to find that drugs offered relief from my symptoms. People who knew me at the time said it was like I came to life. For my part I found that I enjoyed life again and that I could escape from the constant sorrow and anxiety that had plagued me for so many years.

I have little idea how healthy people will respond to Exposed, http://www.exposed.at/, a new documentary about a woman with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. I responded with, "hey, look, it's my life on the screen," but I also kept thinking about them (you?)--the chemically tolerant folks. Squirming a little, I wondered if the general public would be sympathetic as the woman, named as Katherine, delivered herself up to the camera in painful, private moments--exposed indeed.

Continued from last month:
As I look back to all that happened, a little over a year ago, my mind becomes clouded with the whirlwind of tribulations that my child and I endured. In the midst of it all were my own emotions of fear, disbelief, rage, and most importantly…guilt. Why did I allow my child’s health to progress to this poor state? Why didn’t I listen to my instincts and pull him out of school on my own? |

I must admit that I struggled with the Christmas holidays as I felt deprived of being a “normal” participant in the festivities. It gave me lots of time to reflect on my life and that has turned up some interesting findings as I move into 2007. My MCS began when I was chelating from mercurialism. I first read Andrew Hall Cutler’s book, “Amalgam Illness: Diagnosis and Cure” in 2002 when I was diagnosed. I was too ill then to fully understand much of it. |

This month MCS America wants to take the time to thank everyone in the MCS community who work hard towards coming together for a common cause, namely recognition of MCS in the medical and legal community. |

Faith Healing? Regardless of what faith triggers an instant healing, I remain skeptical. My skepticism is related to my outrage at doctors and others who tell EIs that their illness is "all in their heads." You know the old story. In a way, faith healing sort of lends credence to that idea. You know it was all in your head anyway so changing the way you think about your "illness" healed you. |
